The carnivore diet, also known as the meat diet or carbohydrate-free diet, is a dietary regimen based solely on animal products, such as meat, fish, eggs and some dairy products, to the exclusion of all forms of carbohydrates, including fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds. While this can be an effective weight loss strategy for some people, there is plenty of evidence that following a carnivorous diet for long periods of time can be harmful to health.
Here are some of the risks and possible side effects of this diet:
A carnivore diet can lead to deficiencies in many essential nutrients, including fiber, vitamins (such as vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin K) and minerals (such as potassium, magnesium, iron). Limited consumption of fruits and vegetables can increase the risk of nutritional deficiencies and lead to health problems.
A high-fat diet, rich in saturated fats of animal origin, can increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. Excessive consumption of animal fats can lead to higher levels of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and increase the risk of atherosclerosis. In some people, values have risen to 1,000 mg/dl, while the norm is 100 mg/dl!
Studies suggest that a diet rich in red and processed meat may increase the risk of cancer, especially colon cancer. Consuming large amounts of red meat may be linked to chronic inflammation, which promotes cancer development.
Fiber restriction in the diet of carnivores can lead to gastrointestinal disorders such as constipation, inflammatory bowel disease and disorders of the intestinal microflora. A lack of fiber can also impair the body's ability to remove toxins and harmful substances from the intestines.
Although some people can successfully lose weight in the short term by following a carnivore diet, long-term adherence to this diet can lead to weight irregularity, difficulty maintaining weight loss results and metabolic disorders.
There is no scientific evidence that this type of diet is safe and healthy. People who have promoted this lifestyle have aged by about 50 years! There is no reason why this type of diet is dangerous to health.
In conclusion, a carnivore diet may have short-term benefits, but in the long run it may involve some health risks. You should also always consult a doctor or nutritionist before making drastic changes to your diet to avoid possible damage to your health.
